Fish Return Home Project

Fish Return Home Project

Date: 8 Jul 2014

To assist with the restoration and conservation of marine resources, SCG Chemicals initiated the "Fish Return Home, Ngarm Tah Shore" project, by transforming PE 100 pipes left over from polyethylene plastic experiments, to construct a mock-up fish habitat. The outcome is a kindergarten for small marine animals that serves as a niche for other sea creatures as well as increasing the opportunity for local fishermen from within the community to raise additional income. Personnel from SCG Chemicals, local fishermen, and local volunteers cooperated in this project on 1st December 2012 at the Klaeng Ka Chet sub district, Mueng district, Rayong province. PE 100…From Pipelines to A Model Fish Habitat Polyethylene pipe, or PE, are produced from polyethylene plastic and used to transfer drinking water. They have passed safety standards by the VVT, Finland and other institutions around the world to prove that no toxic chemicals are present in drinking water and seawater, and have a shelf life up to 100 years. Reusing PE 100 pipes left over from manufacturing for model fish habitats will lower energy consumption in waste management, reduce toxic substances, and is harmless for land and marine environments. Model fish habitats require 110 mm. and 250 mm. PE pipes. They are linked together to form a total of a hundred 2-square-meter pyramids and placed in appropriate locations in the sea in Rayong. The behaviors of organisms are studied and recorded every three months and this is expected to be completed in August 2013. Not Just a Fish Habitat, but a Habitat for Everyone. There are three objectives for this project. 1. First is the restoration of marine resources, and we hope that once we install the homes, there will be many fish living in it. This will increase the natural marine resources. 2. The project aims to increase jobs and income for local fishermen. 3. The project answers to "SCG Chemicals Loves the Environment" because if we do not reuse PE pipes, they will have to be recycled which wastes energy. "Cooperation" and "Sustainability" are at the core of CSR. Aside from appreciating the success of this project, locals have actively participated right from the start. "Local fishermen have to construct the model fish habitat themselves so they can feel a sense of ownership. We give what we have, our staff do not come and construct the habitats, the community and land owners must work together on that in order to achieve sustainability." If the ocean is abundant with sea creatures, then that is a guarantee of a good lifestyle. If everyone acknowledges that the fish habitat is also their habitat, they will take lots of care and protection.
Eco-Community

Eco-Community

Date: 3 Jul 2014

Aside from being an Eco-Factory, building a strong community is one of SCG Chemicals main goals, especially in the area of environmental conservation a major issue in today s world having a direct impact on daily lives. Tackling environmental issues thus becomes extremely important in maintaining quality communities and societies. With this in mind, SCG Chemicals established the "Eco- Friendly Model Communities" with support from the Pollution Control Department and the Maptaphut Municipality. The project is to boost the environmental development of communities in Rayong province. "We have currently chosen 17 communities to participate in the project with each community contributing to the environment in their own way. We have already selected six communities from the Maptaphut district, with Huay Pong Nai- Saphan Namtuam ranking first on the list because of their readiness and peak interest in living sustainably. Everyone from the community is involved in the project having already started tackling some environmental issues, they are clearly a learning center for other communities." The project has four major areas to cover: green space, waste recycling, water management, and biogas. SCG Chemicals and the government give financial support, public relations, and pay attention to the quality of life of the community in order to motivate all community members to participate in the project. The Huay Pong Nai- Saphan Namtuam community has initiated a green space and waste bank project before and was successful because of everyone in the community lending a helping hand. There are several more sustainable communities such as those around Khao Yai Da, located 30 kilometers from the factory. They have participated in building check dams, five thousand of which have been supported by SCG Chemicals since 2010. Until now, the locals of Ranyong's fruit farms have water to use all year around. Another community is in the Song Saleung district, acting as both a model and a learning community opened for people to come and study sustainable agriculture and resource management under the 'sufficient economy philosophy. 'Social Responsibility' is one of SCG Chemicals four most important visions, giving full support to all personnel and those involved in our business to bring to the surface the idea of public consciousness. "We give back to the community – they are our neighbors. If our neighbor is happy in a good environment, our business will proceed smoothly. If we are not too concerned with profit, but give back to society as well – such as through scholarships, sporting events, mobile clinics, product support, local shops, and so much more – we have the potential to balance the industrial sector with communities and the environment in a sustainable way. But the core of it all is in the joining of hands between the government, the business sector, and locals, building on trust, honesty, and the love of a family. From company to community, from one model community and then building on this foundation to thousands in the future. The consciousness of and responsibility for the environment will weave its way into an everlasting sustainable lifestyle.
